Maple Pass North Cascades

A "refugee" from Washington State who was on a backpack we led earlier this summer told us about this hike, and how great it was. Actually, we had been on the lower part of the hike back in 2013. But it was a great day for a hike on this trip, so we could not resist. It turns out to have been the BEST day hike we have done in the US in a very long time.

  • It is a bit over a half hour drive from Winthrop to Rainy Pass.  By the time we got to the Pass, the weather was semi-marginal.  We would end up hiking the loop clockwise, which was not the way we intended, but glad we did.

  • The climb is fairly steep after the first half a mile.  You gain about 2000 feet in 2.7 miles or so.  But the views are worth it, even on a misty cloudy day.
