Escalante1992: Dry Fork Coyote to Scorpion Gulch

In 1992, we did a partial "re-do" of our first group canyon backpacking trip up the Escalante River. This time, from Coyote Gulch to Scorpion Gulch. I have a lot more detailed comments about the changes in backpacking over these times that you can read about here: http://www.twohikers.org/CanyonCountry/Escalante92/lower_escalante92.htm These are all scanned slide, so the quality is not as good as I would like.

Standing in the Knoxville Airport, it's Ray, Barbara A, and George. Ray, a veteran of many canyon trips, was not able to do this one: The brace he is wearing I THINK was due to an auto accident earlier in the year that resulted in a broken back.

We flew to Las Vegas, spent the night in St. George, Utah, and are now in the thriving metroplex of Escalante, Utah, having lunch. We have met up with Sue and Andy (red T-shirt and beard), friends from Texas.

Looks like we are at the trailhead (after driving our shuttle vehicle out the Early Weed Bench Road) and someone is trying to show the way on those old-fashioned things called paper topo maps.

Dropping down into the Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch. Yes, it looks very dry.

Never a bad idea to apply a little more sunscreen before we leave the trail head. But we really need to start hiking, as we have about 6 miles to our first campsite.

Camp, finally, after about 4 hours of hiking. Hmm, Andy seems to be stuffing his face. Camp was in a small side canyon of Coyote Gulch, just above the mouth of Hurricane Wash.

The next morning, it is time to pack up. Our objective for this evening is to get to the mouth of Steven's Canyon, on the Escalante.
